Some Likely Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

While most couples desire to have their own children, not all of them are physically capable of it. One of the most common issues that leads to an inability to create children is erectile dysfunction, which is a condition characterized by the inability of the male partner to sustain an erection, which is necessary in the production and release of sperm cells.

Erectile dysfunction, or impotence, has many identifiable causes. While psychological factors are often considered a major cause, most cases of impotence are attributable to physical factors. Hypertension and heart diseases are among the known causes of impotence in men. In a different viewpoint, either may cause the other, such that impotent men are at risk of heart attack.

Researchers have also discovered a link between erectile dysfunction and certain conditions of the central nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. Irregularities in the production of prolactin and testosterone hormones are especially blamed for the condition. In fact clinically, a drop in testosterone production level has always been associated with various cases of erectile dysfunction.

Men who have undergone special types of surgery are also at risk of impotence. Not that men should avoid surgery, but procedures that involve the regions of the body connected to the testicles may damage nerves that allow erection. Besides surgery, various medications are also said to leave the same effect, namely antidepressants, antihistamines, and hypertension medicines.
